Desinguraja 2 Movie Review: Ezhil’s Comedy Ride Misses the Mark
Desinguraja 2 marks the return of director Ezhil, known for breezy comedies like Desingu Raja, Manam Kothi Paravai, and classic family dramas like Thulladha Manamum Thullum and Poovellam Un Vasam. Teaming up again with Vemal, this sequel hopes to recapture the fun but delivers only in scattered doses.
The plot centers around a quirky rivalry between two police stations — one led by a lady constable (played by Pugazh, in drag) and the other by Vemal. Trouble kicks in when a daylight murder rocks the town and the victim’s head goes missing. What follows is meant to be a comedy of errors, filled with antics from a line-up of popular comedians.
The core philosophy of Ezhil’s films — “No Logic, Only Fun” — sets expectations. But this time, the comedy feels dated and underwhelming. Despite a massive comic ensemble (Ravi Mariya, Singampuli, Chaams, Pugazh), the film struggles to land solid laughs. The scenes feel stitched together without rhythm, and even promising setups fall flat.
Vemal is earnest in his performance, but the script doesn’t give him much to chew on. The rest of the cast is serviceable. A few scenes involving Ravi Mariya and Singampuli evoke chuckles, but not enough to carry the runtime.
Vidyasagar’s music is forgettable, more a filler than a feature. The climax tunnel sequence is mildly engaging but arrives too late to redeem the film. A major letdown is a sudden emotional subplot involving Jana, which feels forced and tonally out of sync with the rest of the narrative.
The Manjummel Boys parody might have worked had the film released earlier, but after being seen in Santhanam’s DD Next Level, it loses its edge.
In the end, Desinguraja 2 leaves you longing for Ezhil’s past hits like Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran or the original Desingu Raja. Hopefully, the director will bounce back with the kind of rollicking comedy he’s capable of delivering.
