Kuttram Pudhithu Review – A Thriller That Finds Strength In Actors

Published:

An Assistant Commissioner’s world collapses when he returns home to discover his youngest daughter brutally murdered. The investigation quickly zeroes in on a food delivery boy, played by newcomer Tharun, who not only confesses to the crime but chillingly admits to two more murders. What follows is less a straightforward whodunit than a study of character, guilt, and revelation, culminating in a climax that aims for shock value.

Tharun makes an assured debut, carrying the duality of a psychopathic killer and a lover boy with unusual ease for a first-timer. Opposite him, Seshvitha Kanimozhi delivers warmth and gravitas as the doting daughter, leaving a lasting impression. Madhusudhan Rao fits comfortably into his part, while veterans like Nizhalgal Ravi remain frustratingly underused. TSR Srinivasan’s fleeting turn as a court judge, however, injects a welcome spark of authority.

Narratively, the film dares to experiment. Flashbacks are conveyed through sparse re-recordings and voiceovers, a choice that lends the storytelling a textured quality. Yet, these moments of innovation are undercut by investigative sequences that play out too broadly, robbing them of credibility.

At 117 minutes, Kuttram Pudhithu feels uneven in rhythm. Its first half lingers without urgency, while the second half gathers momentum, albeit inconsistently. On the technical front, the film is restrained to the point of dilution: the cinematography captures events but rarely heightens them; the background score lands flat where it ought to escalate tension. Editing offers clarity but misses the tightness that could have made the narrative leaner and more propulsive.

What resonates above all are the performances of its leads. Tharun and Seshvitha bring conviction that often exceeds the material they’re given, anchoring the film’s emotional stakes. Even its title, Kuttram Pudhithu (A New Crime), feels aptly chosen, tying meaningfully back to the film’s core.

Kuttram Pudhithu is an earnest debut effort—compelling in performance, flawed in execution—suggesting talent worth watching even if the film itself never fully delivers on its promise.
