Madras Matinee Review – A Simple Story With Heart That Struggles To Engage Fully

Madras Matinee, written and directed by Karthikeyan Mani, stars Kaali Venkat in the lead role alongside Shelly, Roshni Haripriyan, Vishya, and others in pivotal roles. Veteran actor Sathyaraj makes a special cameo appearance. Produced by Madras Motion Pictures and released by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film promises a heartfelt glimpse into the life of an ordinary man.

The story begins at an old-age home where a once-famous sci-fi writer (Sathyaraj) entertains his friends with tales from around the world. When a caretaker challenges him to narrate the realistic life story of a middle-class man, the writer embarks on a new mission. He soon meets an autorickshaw driver (Kaali Venkat), whose seemingly ordinary life turns out to be layered with experiences that defy common assumptions.

Director Karthikeyan Mani chooses a simple narrative and presents it with a realistic touch. However, the film struggles with a somewhat stretched first half, especially the childhood sequences that fail to leave a strong impression. The absence of a star lead makes it harder for the audience to connect initially, as Kaali Venkat’s natural style can feel unfamiliar to some. The story picks up pace around the interval, and the second half succeeds in keeping the viewers engaged with an appropriate mix of emotions.

Kaali Venkat delivers a commendable and expressive performance, especially shining in scenes like his attempts to learn car driving and heartfelt conversations with children over the phone. Shelly complements well with a sincere and emotional portrayal.

The musical score by KC Balasarangan is effective, with the background music and sound design — especially highlighting the ominous effect of EB wire — crafted skillfully. Anand GK’s cinematography is another strong aspect of the film.

Overall, Madras Matinee is built on a beautiful idea and is well conceived in parts. Had the first half been tighter and more engaging, the film could have offered a more complete and satisfying experience.
