Oh Butterfly Movie Review – Middling Tale of Love and Hate

Published:

Oh Butterfly is a debut directorial from Vijay Ranganathan, starring Nivedhithaa Sathish and Attul as newlyweds facing past secrets in misty Kodaikanal. This chamber drama explores guilt and confession amid a tense love triangle with friend Surya (Ciby Chandran). It packs emotional layers into a tight setting but struggles with execution at times.

Newlyweds Arjun and Gouri visit Kodaikanal post-wedding; he’s reeling from sudden job loss. Gouri wrestles confessing her pre-marriage love for his friend Surya. Chance meeting brings Surya home, intensifying her turmoil. Finale uncovers if truth outs and their bond survives.

Director weaves Gouri’s inner battle tightly but only halfway succeeds. Pacing drags with pretentious touches on small canvas. Uneven tension builds guilt effectively yet fizzles in payoff.

Vedharaman Sankaran evokes Kodaikanal’s chill beautifully, weighting scenes right. Edits by Bhuvanesh Manivannan blunt sharpness, tiring viewers. Vaisagh Somanath’s “Pogathe” refreshes; rest bland, filler-like. BGM spotty; butterfly graphics clean.

Nivedhithaa Sathish nails guilt, strain, and release with power. Attul overcooks husband’s emotional shades. Ciby Chandran fits style but skimps acting. Nasser, Geetha Kailasam, Lakshmi Priyaa vanish without impact.Nivedhithaa’s intensity and visuals chill effectively; key song hooks. Overacting, weak supports, sloppy cuts, and dull tunes blunt edge.
