A stark surprise that hits you by the end of show – Is this really a film from Kannan, an auteur who is far-famed for some breezy family entertainers like Jayam Kondan and Kanden Kadhalai with a sudden transition towards low mediocre movies (Settai and Oru Oorula Rendu Raja), which toppled his directorial career. With Ivan Thanthiran, he bounces back to the highest caliber and rigidly astonishes us for this hasn’t been structure of his moviemaking.

The film traverses through the life of engineering dropouts

The film traverses through the life of engineering dropouts (Gautham Karthik and RJ Balaji), who embark on gadgets stores to earn their livelihood. On the parallel lanes, a rough-and-tumble situation provoked by an Education Minister upon engineering colleges ruins the lives of engineering students. The protagonist gets interwoven into the web of complicated scenario to bring forth the conniving acts of minister and the educational institution forms crux of the tale.

As cited above, a much surprise arrives with Kannan’s newfangled narration and it really lets us wonder how he could keep everything intact from beginning till end. The first half moves with raciness with some initial moments used for establishments. The second half has some slow moments with dragging sequences, but it eventually grips up by the end with a climax that is really convincing.

With ‘Reverse Engineering’ picked up as the basic premise, Kannan hasn’t left the concept scattered anywhere, but sticks to the concept and logical quotients.

With ‘Reverse Engineering’ picked up as the basic premise, Kannan hasn’t left the concept scattered anywhere, but sticks to the concept and logical quotients. The scenes involving the creation of gadgets like housefly camera are very well depicted. The detailing happens to be the intriguing element here. Another highlighting trait with the screenplay is that there are no unwanted songs. Just as the sequence, where you tend to feel that there is going to be a song, we are surprised with action block. On the flip side, there are few logical elements turn out to be diminishing. Say for instance, there is a scene where Modi addresses on Demonetization (November 2016) and suddenly we get to see Sun TV Nandini Episode 40 (TV series commenced only in January 2017).

The background score happens to be appreciable in places, but the songs aren’t really worthy of appreciations. The editing has been placed well and cinematography too is commendable.

Ivan Thanthiran has the theme of Reverse Engineering and its relevance with the fictional situation in this movie decorously handled.

Gautham Karthik has done a neat job with what is required to the role. After appearing in blink and miss role in Maniratnam’s Kaatru Veliyidai, Shraddha Srinath gets a better depiction of her characterization. But the biggest showstopper is RJ Balaji who continuously keeps evoking laughter. The ones involving PETA Trisha and few other funny witty lines break us into laugh.

Overall, Ivan Thanthiran has the theme of Reverse Engineering and its relevance with the fictional situation in this movie decorously handled. It will offer interesting episodes in many places.
