Phoenix Movie Review – Old Plot, New Punch
Phoenix marks the acting debut of Surya Sethupathi, son of Vijay Sethupathi, in a full-fledged action thriller directed by celebrated stunt choreographer Anl Arasu.
Set against the gritty backdrop of North Chennai, the story opens with the brutal murder of an MLA (played by Sampath Raj). At the condolence meet, we are introduced to Surya (Surya Sethupathi), who is soon remanded to an observation home. What unfolds is a relentless pursuit of vengeance, as the late MLA’s family and political affiliates seek blood. The central mystery revolves around why Surya committed the murder and how he survives the escalating threats against him.
Surya delivers a committed and physically intense performance in his debut, surprising viewers with his prowess in MMA and raw screen presence. Abhinaya leaves a mark with her layered portrayal, while Devadarshini and Vignesh bring emotional depth to their respective roles, especially the latter as Surya’s elder brother.
The 120-minute film is packed with high-octane sequences in the first half, keeping viewers on edge as Surya fends off one attack after another. The second half shifts to a flashback-heavy emotional core, offering necessary context but slightly slowing down the momentum. Still, it manages to retain engagement thanks to sharp direction and striking visuals.
Director Anl Arasu plays to his strengths, delivering realistic, gripping action set pieces with a keen cinematic eye. The cinematography, editing, and especially the background score work cohesively to elevate the film’s tension. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar fits the bill perfectly as the menacing antagonist. There are logical loopholes, and it’s not clear, if it’s due to writing error and editing mistake.
However, the core story feels familiar, echoing revenge dramas from earlier decades. The emotional hook lacks novelty, and the excessive violence in parts may alienate sensitive viewers.
Despite its predictable premise, Phoenix thrives on its technical finesse and the raw energy of a promising newcomer.
