Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam Movie Review

Filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, the maverick filmmaker from God’s Own Country collaborates with Megastar Mammootty for ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’, which takes us for yet another unusual experience just like the director’s previous movies.

A group of Malayalam-speaking people is heading back to Kerala, completing their pilgrimage visit to Velankanni. All of sudden, James (Mammootty) asks the driver to stop the vehicle midway, steps down, walks into a village, and enters a house, changes his clothes, addresses the members as his parents, wife (Ramya Pandian). The family members too are in shock and unable to object him as he behaves completely like Sundaram, who disappeared two years ago. What unfolds for the next 24 hours is narrated with fun and emotional moments.

Mammootty has never failed or missed exploring his potential in different and new arenas. Having struck the right chords at the box office with the mass movie ‘Bheeshma Parvam’, a classic unique horror tale ‘Roscharch’ and the 5th installment of ‘CBI Diary’, he continues to exhibit the unique spell with ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’.

Lijo keeps shining throughout the film with his nuances. Say, for instance, the major portion of the film has no background, but the relentless movies and shows from a TV box watched by old grandma resonate throughout the film. The characterizations are brilliantly written, especially, the one played by Ramya Pandian. The performances of Late actor Poo Ramu and Namo Narayanan are appreciable as well.

The fantasy element with mystery yet again establishes the director’s touch of Lijo, who offered a similar appeal in his previous outing ‘Churuli’. The laborers in the farm shown in the blurred image by the climax instill the mysterious element that they have got something to do with the entire play here. The last shot, where the tears roll down the cheeks of grandma, and the stray dog running behind the departed bus lets you emotionally inclined to the world of Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam.
