Poikkal Kuthirai Movie Review

Actor Prabhu Deva’s latest outing Poikkal Kuthirai, directed by Santhosh P Jayakumar (Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuthu, Irandam Kuthu and Ghajinikanth fame) has an ensemble star-cast of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Shaam, John Kokken, Raiza Wilson, Jagan and others.

Prabhu Deva plays Kathiravan, who works for a pesticide company. He has lost a leg and his wife in accident and his only hope and happiness in life is his little daughter. When she falls sick and diagnosed with a terminal disease, he has to arrange a whopping sum of Rs. 70Lac. Unable to find help anywhere, he finally agrees to go by the advice of his imprisoned father (Prakash Raj), which is to abduct the only heir of billionaire parent (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar & John Kokken). However, things turn out to be upheaval, when the little kid is kidnapped even before the protagonist steps into the mission.

The premise might bring you the memories of watching Denzel Washington’s Man on Fire or even its consecutive unofficial remakes across Indian sub-continent. Nonetheless, there are few appreciable elements in the movie including the performance of Prabhu Deva. He has given a diversified performance in two different situations, one with the prosthetic leg and another without it. It really needs special appreciation. On the other hand, director Santhosh brings up his smartness of hiring famous actors on board to make sure that even the feeble moments look passable. Say for instance, we get to see Prakash Raj and Shaam appearing only in a couple of scenes, but still, they draw your attention. The songs by D Imman are just average, but the BGM in few places look good.

The appreciable part is the twists that we get to see in the second hour. However, director Santhosh P Jayakumar could have avoided the songs that are unwanted. The story gets too predictable in the second half and yes, it occurs to be the same, except for the final twist.

Overall, Poikkal Kuthirai is an average fare that has decent performances of actors and some interesting twists.
