YOLO Tamil Review – Good Story, Weak Screenplay Ruins Play
Yolo – Directed by S. Sam with a story penned by Rams Murugan, attempts to blend romance with supernatural elements. The film marks the debut of Dev and Devika in lead roles. While the core idea is intriguing, the screenplay falters, making the overall experience underwhelming.
Story Overview
The film opens with a matchmaking ceremony between a young YouTuber (Dev) and a girl (Devika). During the event, a relative shockingly reveals that Devika is already married to another man. Soon, all evidence—including a registered marriage certificate—proves that both Dev and Devika are already hitched, though neither of them is aware of it.
The mystery surrounding their supposed marriage forms the crux of the narrative.
Screenplay & Performances
Writer Rams Murugan deserves credit for crafting a unique plot with strong potential to appeal to a universal audience. Unfortunately, the screenplay weakens the impact. The narrative loses grip at multiple points, failing to explore the emotional depth the story demands.
The debut actors Dev and Devika deliver performances that are passable. They can’t be faulted much, as the weak writing limits their scope. With sharper dialogues and more engaging emotional arcs, their roles could have left a better impression.
Interestingly, the mysterious marriage angle faintly recalls story elements seen in Paramasivan Fathima, Darling 2, and Hello Naan Pei Pesuren, though YOLO doesn’t directly copy them. The flashback sequence stands out as one of the better portions, managing to convince and engage.
Technical Aspects
On the technical side, the background score supports the narrative decently, and the cinematography adds visual appeal. These aspects elevate the film slightly but cannot fully cover the gaps left by the weak writing.
Final Take
With its fresh idea, YOLO had the ingredients for an engaging supernatural-romantic drama. Unfortunately, the lack of a strong screenplay and impactful scenes prevents the film from delivering its promise.
