Putham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadha Review

Amazon Prime Video’s Original series ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ that was released last year was based on the lockdown diaries. Well, most of the stories in the anthology movie didn’t work out as audiences were able to relate with the premises and characterizations. It looks like, the big key player in the OTT domain had decided to rectify these errors and come up with a better version in the new edition titled ‘Putham Puthu Kaalai Vidiyaadha’. Well, let us check out how well does this movie comprising 5 stories work out.

The first story titled ‘Mugakavasa Mutham’ is directed by Balaji Mohan. The filmmaker carved a niche of excellence with his short stories and full-length feature movies by making soft and entertaining movies (Except the Maari franchise). He is back to the pavilion with this story that endorses soft, poetic, and of course a feel-good Rom-Com. So far, most of the cop stories have been either a herculean taking on the brutal baddies or the corrupt antagonist cops. In contrast, Mugakavasa Mutham depicts the characterizations of the cops in a beautiful way. The soft and polite side of the police is something out of the blue, and Balaji Mohan deserves special mention. The stellar performances of Gouri Kishen and Teejay are yet another embellishment to the tale.

Second story titled ‘Loners’ is directed by Halitha Shameem of Sillu Karupatti fame. The filmmaker has always strived to make colourful movies irrespective of touching the hard-hitting realities. With Loners, she yet again brings a movie that reveals the exact scenario of IT professionals and their solitary confinements in the name of work from home. A ritual misconception is that the IT professionals are always the money spinners despite the Lockdown playing a spoilsport in many professional domains. However, Halitha Shameem throws deep light into the emotional hassles they face. A very good performance by Lijomol Jose and Arjun Das that intensifies the plot, thereby making it a watchable one…

The third film is ‘Mouname Paarvayaai’ written and directed by Madhumitha. The most common problematic scenario in every married life is the clash between the couple. Well, they love each other irrespective whatever issues that runs down their lives, but still, who renounces their ego first is actually the game. Obviously, this story featuring Joju George and Nathiya in the lead roles embellishes the beauty of married life that comprises clashes and reconciliation. Guess what’s so intriguing about the film? The almost 30-min story has just a couple of dialogues – Coffee and Kaapi, by the end. It’s a musical story that definitely needs special mention for the music director. Joju George and Nathiya deliver an impeccable performance.

Suriya Krishna’s The Mask is too early for universal crowds to perceive it with the right discernment. Of course, the times are changing, but still, there’s a long way to go for the audience to take it wholeheartedly. This story revolves around a gay couple that decides to dwell in an apartment, and the upheavals they face from the external world.

The final chapter is ‘Nizhal Tharum Idham’, directed by Richard Antony that speaks about the inevitable truth of a working married couple, who have no time for their single kid in the house. It’s always a pain for the single son or daughter, whose acquaintance to loneliness can bring out unbearable hassles. Aishwarya Lekshmi delivers a stupendous performance, especially with the single shot of 4 minutes by the end that adds more value to the film.

Overall, Amazon Prime Video has done a remarkable attempt of eclipsing its erstwhile disastrous spell. Putham Puthu Kaalai Vidiyaadha is a decent attempt that will instantly draw the attention of audiences with the first and third chapters. The second one looks little conversational, and will be good for audiences with patience. The fourth and fifth chapter are hard-hitting tales that might take audiences to perceive it with the right mind, and it’s a tailor-made treat for those elite club of audiences, who are open to new and fresh themes.

Verdict: A good package of 5 stories with each catering to audiences from different walks of life. Special mention for the outstanding performers
