Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham Movie Review

It’s been a long wait for Nivin Pauly fans due to the long hiatus involving his new releases. His critically acclaimed Moothan got a decorous response in International Film Festivals, but then the entertainer ‘Nivin Pauly’ was the need of the hour for his fervent fans. Apparently, the visual promos of Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham (Wealth, Women, War) assured a 100% laughter-riot from the star. The story embraces the western movie influences (Looks like director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval has been an ardent buff of such movies). Say, for instance, the kid cycling through the corridor is a funny replica of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Well, the movie majorly banks on the witty lines, dim-witted yet funny sequences, and slapstick elements. Not often do we come across a movie that encapsulates all the sub-categories of humor together. Director Ratheesh deserves special mention for amalgamating them together. As with performance, every character does a remarkable job. However, the lead actors Nivin Pauly and Grace Antony don’t have more to tickle our funny bones, but the other characters have that scope. The ultimate showstopper is the drunkard character, who consistently keeps us indulged in laughter either through his actions or humorous lines. His conversation with the novelist that stirs up a heated argument on the mayflower, rain in the 40 Degree summer is the cherry-pick.

Art Director Anees Nadodi deserves special mention for being inspired by those abovementioned movies to create a similar ambiance (Dark-tinted interiors). It is obvious that he has made the vision of the director come true. The musical score becomes a minus factor here. Too much western influence makes the story setting look alien to us. This is where the director should have Indianized the movie. There aren’t many takers for Woody Allen-Agatha Christie’s pieces of stuff (The movie is treated in the same manner, which is not a flaw, but the music could have been better).

The running length is 2 hours, which slightly gets tedious in the middle part. We do feel if the scenes are repeated. Of course, it’s a big challenge to take the story of 2 hours in a single location engagingly. Either, few more slapstick elements or trimming the duration would have worked out better results. The theft element could have been yet more intensified. Having revealed by the beginning that the jewels are fake ones, this hampers the interest of who the thief could be. If these aspects were modified, then the movie would have scored a few more brownie points. Precisely, the audiences aren’t investing anything in tickets. In this aspect, Kanakam Kaamini Kalakam is a movie that you can watch with your family and friends during your leisure or weekend times as it favors you with an ample dose of humor.
